British and other Allied troops waiting to be evacuated from the beach at Dunkirk.

The Miracle at Dunkirk

On May 26, 1940, the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from the French port of Dunkirk began. Over the course of nine days, roughly 1,000 ships (more than two-thirds of them civilian vessels) spirited nearly 350,000 Allied troops from almost certain annihilation. Although it was unquestionably a retreat, Dunkirk became a symbol of British perseverance in the face of the seemingly unstoppable Nazi juggernaut.
